Nokia unveils Lumia 620, the cheapest Windows Phone 8

If you want to get your hands on a Windows Phone 8 smartphone without spending too much, then Nokia Lumia 620 may be your lucky choice: it will only cost little more than 250 $ and will be available from Q1 2013.

What will you get for that price? Some nice stuff, actually:  3.8" ClearBlack TFT display, NFC, microSD support, dual core 1 GHz Snapdragon CPU, 512 MB RAM, 5 Mp camera with LED flash, frontal VGA camera and, since it's a Nokia WP, you'll also have access to exclusive apps like Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, Nokia City Lens, Nokia Music and more. Nokia Lumia 620 uses exchangeable shells, which come in 7 different colors: white, black, yellow, cyan, lime green, magenta, orange. They're made with a "dual-shot" technique: two layers of polycarbonate, one of which is transparent or translucent, produce secondary color blends and depth effects. Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia "830" or Sony Xperia P?

Ok, so... I want to buy a new phone soon. The three contestants are Nokia Lumia 920, rumored Nokia Lumia "830" and Sony Xperia P. Well, I lied: actually I'd totally buy a Lumia 920 (THE smartphone right now, imho), but I want to spend way less money, so the real options are only two.

Nokia Lumia 920 (click), powered by Windows Phone 8, boasts a 8.7 mp Carl Zeiss PureView camera with OIS (image stabilization for stills and videos -works great!) and BSI for optimal low light photography. The display is 4.5" and comes PureMotion HD+ technology and super sensitive touch: it can be used even with common gloves on or with other objects. Lumia 920 has wireless charging capability built-in, dual core fast CPU, 100% offline Nokia Maps & Nokia Drive and more.

Option A: Nokia Lumia 830. Actually, its name hasn't been confirmed yet and its specs are still unknown. Lumia 830 made its appearance in some pics and is rumored to be a mid-level WP8 smartphone -Lumia 710's successor? Who knows. I'd actually like a Windows Phone 8, so I'm waiting for some official infos to surface first, one of them being its price tag.

Option B: Sony Xperia P (click). For me it's one of the most beautiful smartphones right now, especially the silver model. Nice camera, ok CPU and RAM, very good 4" display and more. It's getting Jelly Bean in the next months, too. I like Android and I'm already enjoying it on my Asus Transformer tablet. Unless the Lumia 830 will have a very low price and interesting features, I'm probably going for Xperia P. Silver one!

La risposta corretta è "Floating touch": Xperia Sole, che può essere utilizzato anche con i guanti, permette di evidenziare un collegamento web senza toccarlo; in questo modo, è possibile sempre capire su quale link si sta per cliccare, cosa molto utile per collegamenti molto vicini e/o piuttosto piccoli.

Swipe UI, open source, a detta di alcuni "rivoluzionario": Nokia N9 (in foto), sconosciuto ai più a causa di poca promozione e diffusione da parte di Nokia stessa, è l'unico smartphone con sistema operativo MeeGo Harmattan in commercio e, quasi sicuramente, l'ultimo prodotto dall'azienda finlandese, che ha scelto Windows Phone come piattaforma principale. Nonostante ciò, N9 ha vinto diversi premi (design, user experience) ed è ritenuto, da molti utenti e importanti siti web del settore, un ottimo smartphone. Ebbene, MeeGo potrebbe avere un futuro, grazie a una nuova compagnia: Jolla.

Fondata nel 2011, può contare tra i suoi dipendenti diversi ex-membri del team Nokia MeeGo e altri importanti figure della community open source (qui ulteriori dettagli). Jolla sarebbe al lavoro di uno smartphone già dalla fine del 2011: nuova UI e sistema operativo basato su MeeGo OS, Qt e progetto Mer (click). Una delle caratteristiche più interessanti di MeeGo Harmattan su N9 era proprio la user interface, quindi spero che  la "nuova UI" non si discosti troppo da quest'ultima. Detto questo, non ci resta che attendere ulteriori novità...!

ENGLISH:: Nokia N9 (MeeGo Harmattan OS), mainly thanks to its Swipe UI and its nice design, is a favourite for many people. However, due to low promotion and market availability by Nokia itself, not everyone knows it or could buy it. Jolla, a Finnish company founded in 2011, is promising to give a future to the open source Linux-based OS. It includes some Nokia Harmattan team ex-members and important people from the open source community (more details here). Jolla is working on a smartphone since the end of 2011: it will have a new UI (I hope it won't be too different from the N9 Swipe one!) and will be based on MeeGo OS, Qt and Mer project (click). All we can do now, is just wait for more news...!
